State History: North Carolina

The first people in the region of North Carolina were the Native American tribes including Algonquian speaking Chowanoke, Roanoke, and Pamlico (on the East coast). The West coast was home to Iroquoian speaking Cherokee tribe.

 

The first true settlers were led by Sir Walter Raleigh  and they established the famous "Lost Colony" 436 years ago in 1587. This original colony developed hostile a hostile relationship with the Native Americans and most colonists returned to England with Sir Francis Drake in 1586. Some say it is a folk tale, but there are still remains of this "Lost Colony" on Roanoke Island in North Carolina

North Carolina is one of the oldest states in America, one of the 13 original colonies. It became the 12th state in the Union when its General Assembly ratified the Constitution on November 21st 1798. In 1861 North Carolina joined the Confederacy during the beginning of the Civil War, and surrendered 7 years later to rejoin the United States.

 

The Wright Brothers were first in flight in 1903. The 1st nugget of gold was found in North Carolina. North Carolina was the birthplace of 3 presidents. Those presidents were: Andrew Jackson in 1828 (7th), James Polk in 1845 (11th), and Andrew Johnson in 1865 (17th).
